Circuit Board Repair for Industrial Plants, Machines and Legacy Equipment

Defective circuit boards, control boards and printed circuit boards in industrial plants quickly lead to machine downtime, production losses and high consequential costs. Often it is not the entire machine that is defective, but a single electronic assembly, a damaged component, a cold solder joint, a faulty relay, a capacitor, a conductor track or a control board within the system. Retrofit GmbH handles circuit board repair, technical fault analysis, the repair of electronic assemblies and the replacement of defective components. Where an assembly cannot be repaired economically, we support you with the procurement of suitable replacement boards. Our goal is to reduce downtime, minimise production losses and avoid costly new purchases wherever possible.

Maximum performance, minimum downtime

Circuit board repair instead of buying new or modifying the system

In many production facilities, machines operate reliably for many years. These systems often remain mechanically efficient while individual electronic components fail. A new original circuit board, however, is not always readily available. In some cases control boards, printed circuit boards or machine boards are already discontinued, difficult to obtain or expensive. We have summarised the risks around discontinued components in industry and how to avoid buying the wrong part in a separate article. Professional circuit board repair helps keep existing systems running and avoids costly modifications. Retrofit GmbH tests defective circuit boards independently of the manufacturer.

Circuit board fault analysis: Basis for a sound repair decision

A professional circuit board fault analysis is the first step towards a reliable solution. The goal is to isolate the defect technically and determine whether a repair is possible, economically viable and suitable for continued system operation. When you have a circuit board tested, we always consider the defective assembly in the technical context of the machine, because faults often originate from peripheral components and reappear after a component swap alone.

Component replacement & parts

Targeted component replacement of circuit boards such as relays, capacitors, ICs, transistors, resistors and replacement of electronic components.

Circuit traces & solder joints

Repair of cold solder joints by resoldering, as well as precise conductor track repair in case of thermal breaks or interruptions.

Ultrasonic Cleaning & Diagnostics

Gentle circuit board cleaning using ultrasound to remove dust, oxidation and repair moisture damage.

Control board and PCB repair

Control board repair and PCB repair

Control boards and printed circuit boards fail for different reasons, and that determines the repair. On a control board the fault usually sits in a component: relays, optocouplers, voltage regulators or driver ICs give way after overvoltage or thermal stress. In PCB repair the damage more often affects the substrate itself, through lifted vias or damaged solder pads. Which case applies only becomes clear after measurement in the laboratory.

Control board repair

We repair control boards from machine tools, production lines and special-purpose machinery. Where the assembly belongs to a higher-level controller, we test it together with the repair of the PLC control system, because fault patterns frequently originate in the periphery and reappear after a component swap alone.

PCB repair

Whether a printed circuit board can be repaired depends on the condition of the substrate. Individual broken conductor tracks can usually be saved; a board that is extensively charred or delaminated cannot. In that case PCB replication is the alternative, rebuilding the assembly to the same function.

Circuit board repair for older machines and legacy equipment

Why replacement boards for legacy machines are unavailable

On older machines it is often not only the spare parts that are missing, but the documentation. Circuit diagrams can no longer be found, the manufacturer no longer supports the series and individual components are no longer produced. At the same time these systems are frequently still productive and tailored to the specific manufacturing process. A complete replacement of the control electronics then means rebuilding the control cabinet, reprogramming and long downtimes.

Keeping existing systems economically viable

Circuit board repair for older machines and the repair of printed circuit boards for existing systems offer a manufacturer-neutral way to keep industrial electronics and production systems running cost-effectively. This applies beyond the control electronics: boards from operator panels are handled as part of HMI panel repair, mainboards from control computers as part of industrial PC repair. Our references from industry show how this looks in real projects.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about circuit board repair

What does circuit board repair mean?

Circuit board repair refers to the technical testing, fault analysis, and repair of defective printed circuit boards, control boards, or electronic assemblies. This can include component testing, component replacement, resoldering, trace repair, or cleaning.

Circuit board repair is often worthwhile if the board is hard to find, expensive, or discontinued. Especially with older machines and existing systems, a repair can be more economical than purchasing a new one or upgrading.

Depending on the type of damage, control boards, circuit boards, industrial boards, machine boards, power supply boards, power boards, relay boards, communication boards, HMI boards or industrial PC mainboards can be tested and repaired.

Common causes include thermal stress, aging, moisture, corrosion, overvoltage, defective components, damaged conductor tracks, cold solder joints, vibrations or mechanical damage.

Depending on the condition of the circuit board, cold solder joints can be inspected and repaired. Whether this is possible and advisable depends on the type of damage and the assembly.

Depending on the extent of the damage, a circuit trace repair may be possible. It must then be verified whether the electrical function can be reliably restored.

When circuit boards are charred or burned out, it’s necessary to assess the extent of the damage to the board and surrounding components. In some cases, repair is possible; in others, replacement is more practical.

Depending on the assembly and technical capabilities, a functional test or a final inspection of the circuit boards can be performed. Specific testing options depend on the device and the application.

Costs depend on the damage and the testing effort involved. The main factors are the effort required to locate the fault, the availability of the components needed, the extent of the repair and the amount of testing carried out afterwards. Replacing a single component sits well below an extensive conductor track repair. After diagnosis you receive an assessment of effort and cost before the repair begins.
