Sustainability in industry means more than just planning new plants more efficiently. Often, sustainable practices begin where existing machines, industrial plants, and electronic components can be used effectively for longer. This is precisely where sustainability in the retrofit sector comes into play.
PRESERVE EXISTING PLANTS INSTEAD OF A PACKAGE UPGRADE
Retrofit GmbH supports industrial companies worldwide in continuing to operate existing plants economically, repairing industrial electronics, procuring discontinued components, and avoiding unplanned plant modifications. Many production plants remain mechanically stable, reliable, and productive. However, aging electrical and electronic components often become critical.
REPAIR INSTEAD OF NEW PURCHASE
Industrial electronics contain valuable materials. Prematurely disposing of a component results in additional costs and electronic waste. A fully functional existing system does not automatically need to be replaced just because individual electronic components fail. Preventive maintenance allows for the early detection of wear and tear and technical risks.
Targeted repair of defective circuit boards, replacement of aged capacitors, faulty power supplies or damaged relays and connectors.
Visual inspection, cleaning of assemblies and control cabinets, and thermal testing of components to avoid emergency repairs.
Identification of critical components, analysis of the repairability of discontinued assemblies and use of tested replacement assemblies.
In a classic retrofit, the machine’s mechanics often remain largely unchanged. At the same time, the entire electrical system is replaced with a new generation of electronics (new controllers, drive technology, HMIs, cabling, and programming). Such a complete retrofit requires significant investment (often in the range of 60–80% of a new machine). It’s important to note that if the mechanics remain unchanged, the machine’s output usually doesn’t increase automatically. The benefits must therefore always be evaluated in relation to the costs.
Retrofit GmbH understands retrofitting in a practical, sustainable, and economical way. Not every existing plant requires a complete overhaul. We preserve the existing mechanical components and repair, replace, or procure electrical or electronic wear parts, defective components, or discontinued parts in a targeted manner. This approach conserves valuable resources, reduces costs, and supports sustainable plant operation without expensive new acquisitions.
A sustainable retrofit strategy begins with a structured technical inventory to ensure the continued operation of your systems.
Documentation
Recording of relevant machines, control cabinets and electronic assemblies including nameplates, serial numbers, photos and fault history.
Condition Assessment
Critical components are examined in detail for aging, wear, repairability, spare parts availability and failure risks.
Solution Review
A thorough assessment is conducted to determine whether a component can be repaired, replaced by a tested replacement unit, or obtained as a spare part.
Recommendation
Depending on the result, we recommend repair, reuse, preventive maintenance, replacement, spare parts stockpiling, or targeted procurement.
planning
The results are documented and serve as a basis for maintenance, spare parts strategy, business continuity or sustainability measures.
Key information at a glance
Sustainability in machine retrofitting means continuing to use existing machines and industrial plants as efficiently as possible. This includes repair, replacement, maintenance, and procurement of industrial electronics to avoid new purchases or extensive modifications.
Repair can be more sustainable because existing components can be reused and fewer new components are needed. However, whether a repair makes sense must be assessed on a case-by-case basis, both technically and economically.
Yes, repairing, testing, reusing, or specifically refurbishing electronic components can contribute to reducing electronic waste. The specific effects depend on the individual project.
Not always. In many cases, repair or targeted replacement can be significantly more economical than purchasing a new system or undertaking a complete retrofit. However, the actual costs depend on the system, its condition, the availability of spare parts, and the technical scope.v
These include, among other things, PLC controllers, frequency converters, servo controllers, industrial PCs, HMI panels, control boards, circuit boards, power supplies, drive components and electronic assemblies.
